(FORTHCOMING in Kanienʼkéha)A Taste of Queer Montreal: An Exhibition of 2SLGBTQ+ Food and Drink History
(Please note that this is the English version of the exhibition. There are also versions available in Français, Kanienʼkéha, Inuktitut, and Anishinaabemowin).
Food and drink have played an important role in Montreal’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Whether eating a croissant at a lesbian cafe, drinking wine at a gay dance, pouring coffee at a group meeting, doing shots at a queer bar while line dancing, sharing a pitcher during a drag show, or serving dinner at a fundraiser, food and drink foster community and encourage gathering. Montreal’s queer food culture ranges from bake sales supporting transitioning friends, protests after bar raids, and the distribution of books, zines, and pamphlets about nutritious foods to support HIV and AIDS positive folks. In this exhibition, you will encounter a variety of materials highlighting the role of food and drink within the diverse 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Montreal, past and present.
A note on terminology: terms within the 2SLGBTQ+ communities change over time. When it is possible to be specific, we use the terminology from the documents and objects we discuss. The word “queer” is used throughout this exhibition as an umbrella term, even when it might be anachronistic.
The physical exhibition includes materials from the Archives gaies du Québec, the Archives lesbiennes du Québec, and private collections. This digital exhibition available at cafequeermontreal.comcompliments the physical exhibition and aims to make these resources available for years to come. This exhibition also includes audio clips and transcripts from the Montreal Lesbian, Queer, Two-Spirit, and Non-Binary Oral History Project.
The exhibition posters have been translated from English into French, Kanienʼkéha, Inuktitut, and Anishinaabemowin. Object labels are in English and French.
A free walking tour related to the exhibition is available at: ______
To provide resources for further research, we created a database with 2SLGBTQ+ food and drink spaces in Montreal over time, also available at: __cafequeermontreal.com_. We encourage you to browse and contribute entries for any spaces we might have not yet included.
The exhibition’s curators and creators of the walking tour are Alex D. Ketchum, Al Dervisevic, and Kerrilee Commier. Thank you to SSHRC and McGill’s ARIA Internship Program for your financial support. Thank you to Simone Beaudry-Pilotte, Laure Neuville, and Pierre Pilotte for your support. Thank you to our translators Amélie Ducharme, the team at Apatakaa Translations, ____ and to Kit Chokly for copy edits.
We hope this exhibit gives you an appetite for learning more about Montreal’s 2SLGBTQ+ histories!
I. Discoverability
How have 2SLGBTQIA+ folks located queer-owned and/or queer-friendly restaurants, cafes, bars, farms, and other spaces—especially in a pre-Internet age? In addition to word of mouth, travel guides, maps, directories, advertisements, and articles in LGBTQ+ periodicals helped locals and visitors find spaces to drink, eat, and gather in Montreal. These materials often indicated if the brick and mortar spaces or pop-up parties catered to specific racial and gender demographics within the community.

II. HIV/AIDS
The HIV/AIDS epidemic impacted every aspect of queer life in Montreal, including eating, drinking, and celebration. Food-centred social events, such as ticketed dinners, were used to fundraise and uplift the community. Wasting Syndrome and other HIV/AIDS complications made access to healthy, nutrient-rich food vital. To support each other, Montreal’s queer community circulated dietary guidebooks, zines, and other materials. Food imagery was also prominent in AIDS-themed art from the period.

III. Political Resistance
The history of Montreal’s LGBTQ+ political resistance has been intrinsically linked with food and drink. While the American resistance at Stonewall Inn (1969: NYC), Compton’s Cafeteria (1966: San Francisco), Cooper’s Donuts (1959: LA), and Black Cat Tavern (1967: Los Angeles) are more well known, Montreal’s queer community also faced adversity while congregating in bars. Ongoing police harassment, homophobic policy changes, and bar raids inspired the Montreal queer community to band together and fight back—most famously at Truxx Bar in 1977 (Please note that the bar name is sometimes spelled with more than one “x”). Political resistance includes building community solidarity.

IV. Bars
Bars have historically been an important gathering space for Montreal’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Montreal has been home to gay country bars, cruising bars, lesbian-only bars, all-gender queer bars, night clubs, and more! In addition to business records, magazine reviews, and photographs, queer bar archival materials at the AGQ and ALQ include ephemera such as event flyers, matchbooks, coasters, and business cards.

V. Restaurants
An alternative to bars, Montreal’s LGBTQ+ restaurant scene has included a range of cuisines at Bistro l’Un et l’Autre, Chez Jean Pierre, and the vegetarian restaurant Au Jardin. These restaurants were queer-owned and known for hosting LGBTQ+ community events to nourish bellies, minds, and community. The archives house menus, photographs, and flyers from these spaces.

VI. Fundraisers
Fundraisers centred on food, such as potlucks, bake sales, and dinners, have proved to be an accessible technique for supporting Montreal’s 2SLGBTQ+ community organizations, including queer community centres, Arab LGBTQ+ organizations, lesbian and gay phone lines, and legal defense committees. Parties and dances with food and drink could also be fundraisers. Posters for these events specified the kinds of foods and drinks that would be provided and where the collected funds would go.

VII. Coffeehouses and Pop-up Events
Pop-up events and coffeehouses served as temporary meeting spaces for the Montreal queer community. Unlike restaurants and bars, which require substantial financial resources to begin and a larger community to sustain, a more diverse range of people within Montreal’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities could organize unique and recurring events in impermanent spaces centered on food, drink, and, occasionally entertainment. These events included women-only dances, student meetings, and gatherings for queer religious groups. The substance-free events could be especially important for people who were sober and/or did not enjoy partying or alcohol.

VIII. Religious groups
Various queer religious groups in Montreal have historically organized around food. Jewish groups such as Naches and Beth Ahavah held various brunches, lunches, and suppers and shared recipes in their groups’ pamphlets. The Metropolitan Community Church also held coffeehouse social events with gay/lesbian and women-only editions to facilitate community-building, and Montreal’s Queer Muslim Network has hosted potlucks in 2025.

IX. Parties and Dances
Parties have been vital for queer nightlife in Montreal. Held in a variety of venues like community centres and gay clubs, parties often centre on specific groups within the larger LGBTQ+ community. These groups include the gay men’s Black and Blue Benefit Festival and the lesbian Meow Mix parties held at Sala Rossa from 2002–2012. Gay dances held by the student groups of Montreal universities have also historically been popular, with the Gay McGill dances of the 1970s drawing thousands of participants.

XI. Current Montreal Food Enterprises and Events
Montreal’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities continue to drink and dine together. In 2026, Montreal is home to numerous queer-owned cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and bars that aim to foster connection over meals, snacks, and sips. The tradition of pop-up events and parties in addition to brick and mortar locations also continues today.
One of the challenges of curating materials from current businesses and events is that much of the promotional materials are digital-born. This exhibition prioritizes physical materials, but we have also printed some social media and other digital-born materials. The materials from this section are part of a new collection of materials gathered by Ketchum and her team that will be donated to the AGQ after the conclusion of this exhibition. Thank you to the local businesses and community organizers who shared your materials with us.

XII. Zines and Cookbooks
2SLGBTQ+ Montrealers have created zines and cookbooks to swap recipes, share dining and drinking recommendations, inform community members about plants and food as medicine, and much more! Queer community cookbooks can also serve to fundraise for causes.
